The battle of inches

I was reminded recently of Al Pacino's Inch by Inch speed from the film 'Any Given Sunday'.

Here's a few key lines (just replace football with tennis!)

'You find out that life is a game of inches.  So is football.  Because in either game, life or football the margin for error is so small.  I mean one half step too late or too early you don't quite make it.  One half second too slow or too fast and you don't quite catch it.  The inches we need are everywhere around us.  They are in every beak of the the game, every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch.  On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us to pieces for that inch.  We claw with our fingers nails for that inch.  Cause we know when we add up all those inches that's going to make the ******* difference between winning and losing, between living and dying.'

We watched the speech with our Aspire to Excel 'Seniors' squad last night.

Key phrases that we then went out on court to explore:

The inches we need are everywhere around us - could we get up to the ball to take it an inch earlier, could we be an inch lower in our athletic base, could we make contact an inch closer to the top of the bounce, etc, etc

Cause we know when we add up all those inches that's going to make the difference - one inch on it's own is pretty inconsequential if that inch just exists by itself, but when you add another inch and another inch and then another, you begin to pile on the pressure, you begin to take control, you begin to turn the tide.  Just like British cycling's marginal gains.....

Get off your phone David!

David Luis sends out tweet 1/2 hr before KO v Liverpool. Can his mind be fully on the job at hand? The pundits don't think so!!

New rule at Everyball - no phones at training? Think so!

Perseverance over time

If we can learn anything about learning it's this:

There are no quick fixes.  There are no magic bullets.

Instead, the perseverance to daily practice, the piling up of quality session upon quality session leads to transformational change over time.

This is a truth which our society wants to erode.  Instant information, instant entertainment, instant gratification, instant messaging & communication.

Good to see our Seniors last night back to training.  Working at becoming expert as the basics.  Doing the mundane work that simply needs to be done.

Everyball Tennis Touring Team 2016/2017

A new Everyball/Halton UK initiative for competition players aged 12+

As part of the Everyball Academy, we are delighted to announce the launch of the Everyball Touring Team.

The EBT Touring Team will cover international tournaments such as Tennis Europe and ITF’s, as well as domestic events including British Tours, junior grade 1/2’s and regional competitions. The benefits of being part of a touring team with on-hand coach support are well documented and experienced by many of you and we are thrilled to bring this increased level of service to our players. In fact, because we know that much of the 'magic' takes place out on the road in terms of player development we will also be investing considerable resources into this programme to increase sustainability and affordability to our players.

The head coach of the EBT Touring Team is Roy Knight, who most of you will already know from our Aspire to Excel programme. He will be planning and organising the EBT Touring Team Calendar for the coming year, and he and touring assistant Coach Ed Taylor will be the key travelling coaches for future tournament trips, supported at various times by further members of the EBT Performance Coaching team (see Roy and Ed pictured below)

We have identified some initial events for which we plan to hold tours, all of which will offer great opportunities to gain quality match practice and improve ITF/TE/national rankings. These tournaments are listed below:
